This post may contain affiliate links. You can read more about affiliate links under my disclosure policy tab, or by clicking here.

From the Award Winning Author of Millicent Marie is Not MyName

Ballet and baking pies – these are two of twelve year old Georgie Harris’ favorite things. When her parents decide to move closer to her grandmother’s nursing home, Georgie quickly learns the bad news: dance lessons are too expensive in this new town.

Georgie spends most of her time baking pies to bring to her grandmother at the Willow Lakes Nursing Home. There she meets Eve, who inspires Georgie with stories of having danced with a world famous Russian ballerina many years ago.

As Georgie and Eve’s friendship evolves, their tales intertwine in this feel good story showing dreams really can come true.

Interview: Karen Pokras Toz – Pie and Other Brilliant Ideas

Tell us about Pie and Other Brilliant Ideas.

“Pie” is really two stories in one book. First it is about 12 year old Georgie Harris. Georgie’s family just moved to a new town to be closer to her grandmother, Jane, who recently moved to a nursing home. Because of the move, Georgie’s family can no longer afford to send her to dance lessons. Instead, Georgie spends most of her time baking pies to bring to her visits with her grandmother. The second story in the book is about Eve – Georgie’s grandmother’s roommate, who we quickly learn was a ballerina in Russia “back in the day.” Not only that, Eve studied and danced with a world famous ballerina named Paulina. Georgie loves to visit Eve and hear stories about what it was like to study ballet in a different time and country, and especially what it was like to dance with the great Paulina Strofsky.

What inspired you to write this book?

I grew up dancing and now two of my three children dance. I knew I eventually would write a book about dance – it was just a matter of time. I began writing Pie while waiting for my daughter to go on stage at one of her dance competitions last winter. The book originally was going to be about the competitive dance circuit – but turned out much differently once I got to know my characters (which is usually the case).

Are you working on anything new at the moment?

Of course! I’ve just started writing the 4th (and final) Nate Rocks book – Nate Rocks the City. Normally, I write my Nate books pretty fast, but I find myself procrastinating on this one. I’m sure it’s because I just don’t want to say goodbye. I’m also working on another Adult Contemporary novel called “Woven Wishes” to hopefully be released this time next year.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?

I’m a writer? LOL. It still sounds odd for me to call myself that. I don’t know what I am. I’m a mom, and I write. Sometimes if someone asks me what I do, I’ll say I write children’s books (even though now I also write adult books, too). But I have yet to say, “I’m a writer.” I guess after six books, it’s time, huh?

When and how do you find time to write in your daily life?

All three of my children are in school all day, so I try to squeeze in some writing time then. Of course, I always think I’m going to have hours and hours to myself to write, but after I get done doing the million other things on my “to-do” list, there are some days where it is hard to fit it in. Sometimes I just have to put everything aside, and remind myself that this is my job now. It helps that I love to write.

Any advice to aspiring writers looking to self publish?

Be prepared to put in a lot of time and effort – and time – and effort. You need to think of your book as a product, and yourself as a brand. As such, you need to put out the best product possible, and be prepared to compete in a very competitive market. This means – (a) write the best book you can possibly write, (b) put together a test market/group of beta readers, (c) have your book professionally edited, (d) have a professional cover made, (e) have your book professionally formatted, (f) put together a marketing/business plan – and most importantly, keep writing and improving your craft.

What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

I don’t know if it’s a quirk, but I have to have coffee, I need silence, and I don’t outline. I generally have a very loose story idea and then let my characters guide me. Sometimes (like in Pie and Other Brilliant Ideas) the story goes in a completely different direction, and sometimes (as is the case with most of my Nate Rocks books) I have to steer my characters in a particular direction (Nate tends to get a little out of control.) Also, I always like to have a title in place before I start writing. I don’t know why – maybe that’s my quirky thing.

Of all the characters you have written, who is your favorite?

Well now, that’s like asking me which of my three children is my favorite! So, no, I can’t really answer that one. I will tell you this – I had a great time writing Millicent Marie Is Not My Name, and I get a lot of requests to write more books about her. I don’t think I will, but she does live on with her very own blog on my website (www.karentoz.com).

Is there a writer that you would love to co-write a book with?

It is no secret that I am a huge Judy Blume fan. Whenever someone compares my writing style or one of my books to her, I feel like I’ve hit the lottery (not in a monetary sense, but in a self-fulfillment sense). I recently (as in last year) sent her a fan letter (read – stalker letter) and was thrilled when I received an email back from her assistant wishing me well. However, I’m pretty sure I was put on some sort of ‘crazy lady stalker fan stay away from list. But – just in case they are reading this (In a ‘we should really be monitoring this nutjob’ sort of way)  well then ... Judy – call me ...

Do people judge a book by its cover? Who makes yours?

Yes, I do think so, and I also hope so! Now before you think I’m tooting my own horn – don’t. I do not make my own covers. I’m not nearly talented enough (in fact, I have zero artistic talent.) It was only by shear luck that I met my amazing cover artist Deana Riddle of Bookstarter.com. She is the genius behind the incredible artwork that I am fortunate enough to have on my covers. Thank you, Deana!!

What is your greatest challenge as an author?

Time. Writing is only half the battle – and if you really want to break down the time, it’s probably only a quarter of the battle. The other three-quarters is marketing and there is not enough time in the day to market and write. If you are also self-publishing you have the challenge of distribution thrown into the mix and the problem of having upfront costs to deal with – as you can see, there are many challenges – but there are also many rewards.

Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.

Hearing from readers – whether through parents, educators, or the kids themselves. Nothing makes me happier than getting a note (whether it be via email, a tweet, on FB, through my website, through my blog, etc) that says my child usually hates to read, but I can’t get them to put your book down! THAT is what it is all about to me.

What is the best advice anyone has ever given you?

Two things really: When I first started writing my adult contemporary novel Chasing Invisible (titled “invisible” at the time) it was the first anything I had ever written. I hired a writing coach to read through the first few chapters and give me advice. She told me it was awful. (Don’t worry - I have since re-written that story more times that I can count & I am proud to say it recently won an award!) Anyway – she told me that I had a very young voice, and I should consider writing books for kids. I had never considered this before, but I put invisible to the side, and started working on Nate Rocks the World. That was awesome advice, don’t you think?

The next piece of advice I received was when I proudly handed Nate Rocks the World over to my editor – she said, “I know you are tired and want to take a break – but don’t. Start writing the next book.” I didn’t. But, it was great advice, and it’s something I do follow now as I finish up each book.

Can you see yourself in any of your characters?

I get asked this question a lot. Now that I have several books out, you may notice a trend with my kids’ books. They all have moms who have “issues.”  For example... Nate’s mom is a terrible cook and homemaker, Millie’s mom is a little bit of a shop-a-holic, and now Georgie’s mom is a little high strung. Let me say this. They may or may not be based on me. That’s all I’m saying.

What is something people would be surprised to know about you?

While I have always loved to read, writing was always my worst subject in school. I was always a math/numbers person. In college I took calculus and differential equations for fun (and they were!) I worked as a tax accountant until just recently and only started writing a few years ago. I have no explanation for why I suddenly felt the urge to start writing, but now that I’ve started, I can’t stop!

I hope you’ve enjoyed learning a little about me and my books – thanks for having me on your blog!

Thanks Karen! As always, it's been a pleasure.

REVIEW:

I was given an advance copy of Chasing Invisible before we left for our camping trip 2 weeks ago for the purpose of this review. I am a member of Karen's Street Team, and therefore I have been aware of Chasing Invisible for sometime now. I've been extremely eager to read Chasing Invisible so I was beyond stoked when it finally arrived in my inbox. I completed Chasing Invisible on the last night of our trip as I sat around the campfire with the girls. I tried to playing my crying off at the end as smoke in my eyes, but I don't think anyone bought it!

Although this is a new genre for Karen, you certainly could not tell. Karen has a way with words that pulls you in and never lets you go. One of the biggest things that I loved about Chasing Invisible was that I could see Karen in Julia in certain ways. Her love for books and desire to help get books out to everyone. For me, it just connected me to Julia all the more.

I have to admit that at first I did not care for the back and forth in the timeline. It wasn't until all the pieces of the puzzle started to fall into place that I understood the back and forth in time. Of course had Karen written every detail of Julia's life, not only would have taken forever to read, I'm sure it would have just been to much and likely boring. However, Karen was able to add just enough details of Julia's past to make us understand why Julia was so hesitant to date, as well as an understanding of her relationship with her parents.

All Julia's life she has poured herself into books and her studies. Her Mother doesn't seem to understand her, and is always telling her how she should be living her life. Her Father on the other hand always has the right words for her.

When Julia comes home from college for Christmas break her friends, Mother and Father all have words of advise on how she should be enjoying college. Julia tells them she is enjoying college and goes on about how she loves all her classes. Her Father tells her there is more to studying all the time. That she needs to get out, make friends and have fun.

When Julia's friend Robyn, who she meet in her junior year of college, invites her out to listen to a band, she is hesitant.  After some begging she finally gives in but just for a few hours, or so she thinks. Robyn drags her to an after party so she can hang out with one of the band members that she has a crush on. When Julia steps outside to get some fresh air she runs into another band member Chase.

The weeks following Chase is outside almost everyone of Julia's classes, always asking her out. After several failed attempts Julia finally gives in. It isn't long after Chase and Julia are in a serious relationship when his friend sends a tape of his song to a producer. Chase quickly climbs the ladder to stardom and Julia's private life is no longer so private. Will she be able to handle to paparazzi constantly hounding her every move? Can she accept that they will do anything to get a picture of her children? Can she protect them? Will she ever be able to be invisible again? If so, to what length must she go to get out of the limelight?

WARNING: The end is a real tear jerker so have the tissues on hand!

Nate Rocks the School by Karen Pokras Toz - Review & Giveaway

So, who attended the Twitter party on March 4th? I wasn't able to be attentive as I would have liked since we are on vacation but I did enjoy myself, and even learned a few things.

Nate is at it again in the third Nate Rocks book, Nate Rocks the School.

Nate Rocks Is At It Again . . .

According to Nathan Rockledge, fifth grade has plenty of perks. Oh sure, there’s more work and that know-it-all, Lisa Crane, is still around – but, there’s a lot to look forward to as well: a laser tag birthday party, baseball at recess, and even a cool Halloween dance. Of course, all of that means nothing without the biggest perk of all . . . the class trip to New York City in the spring. If Nathan’s class can raise enough money to go, that is.

Give Nathan paper and a pencil and watch as his imagination turns him into Nate Rocks, hero and fifth grade super star. With adventures abound, Nate saves the day time and again. But will Nate be able to save the fifth grade trip?

Join Nathan, his hilarious family, and his friends, as he rocks the school in another fun Nate Rocks adventure.

Karen Pokras Toz lives outside of Philadelphia with her husband and three children. Karen’s middle grade childrens’ novels: Millicent Marie Is Not My Name and the Nate Rocks series, have won several awards including First Place for Children’s Chapter Books and the Grand Prize Overall in the 2012 Purple Dragonfly Book Awards, as well as placing first for a Global E-Book Award for Pre-Teen Literature. Karen is a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers & Illustrators (SCBWI). Her first adult contemporary novel, Invisible, will be released this summer. My Review - 4.5 Stars

If you follow our facebook page you may have seen a post I shared from Karen recently. See, I am part of Karen's Street Team and occasionally Karen gives us some pretty awesome swag. Since Poppy has been reading Nate Rocks as well, she has been helping me with my reviews by doing book reports on the books (two birds - one stone!). When Karen sent out the latest round of swag she sent an autographed bookmark. Since Poppy did so well on her last book report of Nate Rocks the World I gave her the bookmark! She quickly went in search of a place to put it up so it wouldn't be destroyed, but not before I was able to snap this picture and send it to Karen. You can see more pictures of other great kids reading Nate Rocks here. Poppy was pretty excited to see that she had made it to Karen's website!

(Sorry I just had to share Poppy's stardom!)

Well not only is Nate at it again, so is Karen! I've sat thinking, "Which Nate Rocks book is my favorite?" I've found that it a hard question to answer. Karen is so creative and there are so many great highlights in each book. I would have to say without a doubt that the babysitting scene is by far my favorite in Nate Rocks the School! I spent a lot of time babysitting when I was a teen. One family in particular, a family friend, had 3 kids - 2 girls and a boy. They definitely kept me on my toes at all time, and could so have seen the little boy escaping a climbing a tree.Thankfully though he never did!

Nate is in 5th grade - his last year before moving up to middle school. He is finally and the top of the ladder - the big kid in the school, AND they long awaited class trip to New York City! This year couldn't be better. But wait, everything is not set in stone and there may not be a trip to NYC! WHAT? How can that be possible? Everyone has always gone in 5th grade. Plus all the parents signed the permission slip and paid the deposit so it is a go - RIGHT? With the Halloween Party (the BIG fundraiser for the 5th grade trip) being a bust due to Nate's Mom and her awful cooking, Nate and his friends must find a way to raise enough money before the school has to cancel the trip. If Nate didn't have bad luck sometimes he'd never have any luck. With Tommy's big mouth and Nate's outburst in class, they are now stuck working with Lisa Crane to find a way to raise enough money and before Christmas Break.

As with anything involving Lisa, there are lots of arguments on who has the better fundraising idea - Lisa or Nate. Lisa wants to make custom Christmas ornaments. Nate wants to do a car wash. Either way it is November, and it's not exactly car washing weather and there is not nearly enough time to take orders and make custom ornaments.

After another failed attempt for fundraising with the car wash the kids finally decide to hold an auction. They visit all the stores in the mall, passing out flyers asking the stores to make donations to be auctioned off. Nate gets super exited when there is a Phillie's jersey donated. His Mom promises she will bid on it for him, but once it is up for auction she doesn't even bid once. Nate is super disappointed, but not for long! Will they earn enough for their trip to New York City? What about the jersey Nate wanted SO bad? Well, you'll have to scroll down and buy Nate Rocks the School now so you can read it and find out! Hurry! What are you waiting for?

The Nate Rocks series is recommended for children 7-11 years old. If you have an younger advanced reader that is ready to move beyond the simple 2-4 page chapter books then give Nate Rocks a swing! Nate Rocks is not a BOYS book, girls will enjoy Nate Rocks as well. However, if you are looking for a good book for the little girl in your life, I heard from a little birdie that Millicent Marie is Not My Name is pretty darn good!

Karen is a member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI).

EXCERPT:

"The score is three to two in the bottom of the ninth with two outs. The Philadelphia Phillies have a man on first base, but honestly folks, I think the game is over. The Phillies have just not been able to pull it together this World Series, and now with all these injuries, who could the Phillies possibly put in to bat? It looks like this hometown team is running out of options. I hate to say this, but I think the dream of winning this year's World Series is now over for this team. Wait a minute - is that Nate Rocks approaching the plate? He hasn't been off the bench all season. Surely, the Phillies have someone more experienced they can use. Even Nate looks confused, as he steps up to the plate. Here comes the first pitch ... swing ... and a miss. Second pitch ... ooh, a 95 mph fastball ... and that's strike two. The Philadelphia crown of 45,000 is silent, as we wait for the third pitch ... the pitch that determines this year's world champions. The pitcher looks around, winds up, and ... CRACK - that ball is OUT OF HERE! I don't believe it, folks! Nate Rocks has hit a home run and the Philadelphia Phillies have won the World Series!!!"

The Phillies rush outof the dugout, running toward me, as I cross home plate. They pile on top of me. Thunderous cheers of enthusiastic fans echo through the stadium. I can barely breath. I feel a hand reach out to me.

"You did it, Nate! You did it!" The Phillies' first baseman yells. He pulls me to my feet.

Two other players help hoist me up over their shoulders. I wave to the crowd in victory. The players parade me around the base and the crowd begins chanting:

"Nate!"

"Nate!"

"Nate!"

"Nathan! For the fourth time - dinner is ready!"

"Huh?" I ask.

Mom is standing in my bedroom doorway, hands on her hips, staring at me, as I sit on my floor among a sea of colored pencils.

"I said dinner is ready. And for goodness sake Nathan Michael Rockledge, clean up this mess!"

"Okay, Mom," I say.

Mom turns around and heads down the steps.

MY REVIEW - 4.5 STARS

Poppy and I have both been reading the Nate Rocks series. She has never really been a reader, but every once in a while she does find a book she really likes, and then she doesn't put it down. At first I had to actually make her read Nate Rocks the World. She had not picked out the book herself, she knew nothing about it, and therefore had no desire to read it. However, once she started reading she was hooked and read the first 3 chapters that evening.

Recently I had Poppy write a book review for composition, and what better to do a book review on than Nate Rocks the World. Poppy had to give an intro, tell about the author, write a summary about the book, give her opinion and who she would recommend the.to She had to do a re-write once, but over-all she did well.

from Karen!
In her book report Poppy said, "I like how when Nate is daydreaming it is kinda hard to tell at first. When I first read it I was confused what was going on. However, it is not the type of confusing that makes you want to stop reading. I would recommend Nate Rocks the World to anyone that enjoys reading fiction books. You will certainly get a few good laughs!"

I must agree with Poppy, I love the way Karen transitions the book from Nate daydreaming to reality so seemingly.  Half the time I wouldn't realize he was daydreaming until I would read the famous line, "Why because you're Nate Rocks, of course!"

Nate seems like your average, everyday 10 year-old with an annoying older sister. Only, Nate has a very active imagination that takes him away from his annoying sister, his overbearing Mom and her awful cooking, and even the annoying Lisa Crane - his Mom's best friend's daughter and his classmate. When Nate is forced to work with Lisa on a class project it all goes down hill.
He has to waste a Saturday working on the project with her, instead of hanging out with his friends. She writes the entire report, throws his poster away and replaces it with one of her own, does all the talking during the presentation and makes it look like she did it all.

On Halloween Nate is able to go Trick-or-Treating with his two best friends, Sam and Tommy, and without any parents! Nate's older sister Abby and her best friend Emma decide to scare the boys. The boys take off running but Sam is so scared they end up lost. The next day Nate and Tommy plan to seek revenge on Abby, and what better way then her upcoming sleepover for her birthday. Only, sometimes plans don't always go as we'd hope!

Can poor Nate ever catch a break?
Nate Rocks the World is a great book for both boys and girls, old and young. If your child is not reading chapter books yet, it's at a manageable length to read to them. I can even see them turning around and reading it again when they are older. I know we will be re-reading them again, and soon!
