Celebrate Earth Day with Tips from Little Passports

As Earth Day approaches, we wanted to share some of our favorite projects from around the world to help keep our planet green.

Here at Little Passports we know that global adventure wouldn’t be possible without a globe to explore. It’s up to each of us to learn about our planet and keep it healthy. It should be no surprise, then, that Earth Day is one of our favorite holidays! This year, people all over the globe will gather in their communities to celebrate.

In light of Typhoon Haiyan, which hit Southeast Asia in 2013, young people in the Philippines are holding a convention called “Sulong! Power Shift Pilipinas.” "Sulong" means "forward" in the Filipino language of Tagalog. They want everyone in the Philippines to talk to their friends, neighbors and leaders about using sustainable energy sources instead of fossil fuels like gas, coal and oil.

Sustainable energy sources are ones that can replenish themselves (such as wind and water) and would have a lesser impact on the environment. There are many Earth Day celebrations around the world which focus on helping cities switch to these sustainable energy sources and becoming “green” cities.

In Kenya, they are organizing a number of “green-city” events such as city cleanups and tree planting ceremonies at schools. In Uganda, they will hold special raffles, football matches, and competitions to bring awareness to conservation projects in the country.

With a focus on sustainable energy, the Saskatchewan Environmental Society in Canada is holding the “25 Acts of Energy Conservation” campaign. They are challenging people at home and in schools to take 25 steps to save energy and water and to reduce waste. In an effort to help people stay on track, the society will be posting daily tips. They are even holding a contest for the top 25 acts!

In the United States, schools celebrate Earth Day (April 22) by planting trees and cleaning public parks to create public awareness about ways we can keep the Earth healthy. Here are a few simple ways Sam and Sofia (the cute Little Passports characters) try to keep Earth clean.

• Reduce - use less electricity and water
• Reuse - use things like aluminum bottles to carry drinking water instead of buying plastic bottles
• Recycle – dispose of paper and plastic in “recyclable” baskets so they can be made into new materials, using less energy

Making the best of a road trip with Little Passports Travel Tips

“Are we there yet?” was a term coined by the family road trip! While new technology and toys may have silenced backseat conversations, spending time together in the car can still be a great opportunity for family bonding and learning. Even if you plan on bringing the latest gadget to pass the time, try saving them for the end of your trip when everyone is tired and cranky!

Here are some ideas from Little Passports that are sure to make the time fly by (or at least go by a little faster):

Save your most recent Little Passports delivery from Sam and Sofia for your road trip so your kids to learn and explore during the car ride. Say goodbye to your trusted GPS! Bring back the memory of car trips as a kid and use a map! The night before your trip bring out an actual map (if you can find one!) to show your intended route to your child. Even better, copy the map and pull out a highlighter so your child can follow along – and let you know when you missed a turn. Build in time for pit stops – and if time allows, make short stops that incorporate fun activities along the way. Everyone will need a bathroom break and a meal, but if that happens at a place right off the highway and near playground it can be better for everyone! The kids will get fed – and burn off some energy. Hit up a dollar store before you leave and stock up on small toys and activities to give to your kids along the way. Little Passport Lunches Around the World

What better way to explore countries than finding recipes and cooking authentic meals? This week we are studying Australia and we've been searching for recipes from The Outback, but with Yang's tactile issues with eating, it can be very difficult to try new things. Of course as any 8 year would, Yang picked out Fairy Bread, a popular treat at children's parties. 

Check out these interesting facts and lunch ideas from Little Passports.

France- French children enjoy a 3 or 4-course meal that is made from high-quality ingredients, and are mostly made from scratch. The children all sit in the same eating area, the cafeteria. An interesting fact is that there are no vending machines in schools, because they’re banned due to the high sugar and fat content of the treats they carry. Typical school lunches here can have a variety of dishes and ingredients, such as grilled fish, salad, red beans, seasonal vegetables, garlic sausage, fruit salads and chocolate flan (just to name a few). Another perk is that the food is served on plates and eaten with real silverware!




Japan- In Japan, the school lunch ingredients are locally sourced and almost never frozen; in addition, the schools employ nutrition experts that work with kids and teach them the importance of good eating habits. Like the children in France, Japanese kids also eat in a community-like setting with their peers, and even their teachers! The children also wear white hats and robes to serve their classmates, which teaches them teamwork and respect. You can expect to find lots of rice, vegetables, fish, soup, and meat on the plate. 




South Africa- South African school meals have natural ingredients such as corn, squash, sweet potatoes, and yams. There’s also rice, soft porridge, and meat that is sprinkled in with the vegetables. A special stew is made called potjiekos (named after a potjie, a three-legged pot), which originated from Dutch settlers. The cook puts vegetables, meat, potatoes, and spices into the pot, which is heated by small amounts of wood and twigs. After cooking, the result is a delectable stew!




Colombia- Colombian school lunch ingredients usually vary from region to region, but can contain rice, potatoes, fruit, beans, meatballs, and vegetables such as corn and avocados. There’s a special vegetarian menu also available, and children from 2 to 5 years old have their food cut and portioned into smaller sizes.

Welcome Back to School!

I know, I know, I know! We've been AWOL for awhile. SORRY! We've had a lot going on. For the last year and a half we have been working on buying a new house and it seems like all of a sudden it went into high gear. We closed on Aug. 2nd and ended up running into problems with the contractors, movers and the guy we hired to install our heat and air unit. It was a big stressful mess that I am so glad is behind us now so we can focus on getting back to school.

We've officially completed our first week Back to School. We started the week out by taking some pictures of the girls on Monday. At one point I thought I wouldn't be able to get Yang back inside because she was so intrigued by the leaves falling from the trees out back, but once I told her that we would FINALLY be doing our dino unit study she ran right in!

I picked up these herbivorous and carnivorous (not pictured) dinosaur posters at Dollar Tree last school year, along with the dinosaur hats and blue dinosaur cutouts. Sunday night Yang wrote "Our Herd" on the top dinosaur and then each family members name on the other dinosaurs and taped them to the wall.

Once we got back inside from pictures, Yang changed into something more comfortable, she insisted in dressing up for her pictures, and then we hit the books.

On our blue dinosaur cutouts we've been writing the dinosaurs name and the pronunciation on the front, and their class, period, length and if they were a herbivore, carnivore or omnivore on the back. We will staple them together once we are done with our unit study to make a book.

For our craft we did the Grow Your Own Crystal Dino from the Dollar Bin at Wal-Mart and let's just say sometimes you get what you paid for. Crystals had begun to form in the pouch. One long solid one and a few little clusters so I was hopefully but unfortunately no real crystals grew on our dino.

We will be continuing our dino unit next week with a dino dig, cooking fun, Magic Tree House and more - so be sure to come on back and check it out.


Owlet was suppose to be doing a test, but when I went to check on her I found out she had a helper, despite very strict instructions to working independently. Brutus even looks like he has been caught red-pawed.

With the assistance of Little Passports World Edition we've also been studying South Africa. We've learned that there is a country inside of a country in South Africa called Lesotho. With Little Passports each month you get a boarding pass to go online to learn more and play games. We got to go on a virtual safari and take pictures of the "Big Five", which consists of lions, leopards, buffaloes, rhino, and elephants. We did an activity were we had to find out which of the "Big Five" had cubs and which had calves.
